Text Box: A little about Search Engines

Consider this simple fact: 85% of all Internet surfers use search engines to find what they’re looking for.  Now ask yourself the question: “where does my website rank for the particular product or service I offer?”

You can easily determine this by going to Google, the Internet’s premier search engine, and typing a search term that relates to your industry.  The key is to be specific and try to think
of how a regular Internet user might find you.  For example, if you are a travel agent in Christchurch, you may want to type in “Christchurch travel agency” as opposed to just “travel”.  Likewise, if your selling accounting services out of Dunedin, don’t bother with seeing where
you stack up for “accounting”, which is too broad a term, but perhaps “Dunedin accounting services”.

For starters, here are some things that can improve your ranking:

Correctly named pages

Make sure that the title of your website pages are named appropriately.  Again, try to envision the terms a visitor might use to find what you have to offer.  Stay away from product model names or industry jargon.

Meta tag description and keywords

Keywords are not as powerful as they once were because search engines have changed the way they search due to abuse.  Make sure you use them but don’t rely on them.  You can
also use a meta tag description on each page which is the “teaser” a user sees on the search results right before they click through to your page.

Optimise various pages

Don’t necessarily focus all your efforts on your Home Page as there may be other pages in
your website that can also generate traffic for you.

Text vs. graphics

Make your links text-based instead of images or GIF’s.  Also, if they are appropriately named based on what you anticipate users searching you’ll do that much better.

Submissions

Submit your website to Google, Yahoo! and other search engines.  You may want to pay to get listed on Yahoo!  It may take a few months before you see results though, and there is no guarantee.

Links

Get as many websites linking to your site as possible.  The higher their page rank (a value attributed to a web page by Google), the better you should perform for certain keyword terms.
